The sexuality of Adolf Hitler, the man responsible for the deaths of more than 70 million people, has long been a subject of historical research. The scholars tried to probe the dictator’s psychology and repeatedly turned to his sexuality in the search for some clue towards his warped world view. Although he created a public image of a celebrity without a domestic life, dedicated entirely to the cause of Nazi Germany, the question about his sexuality, whether he was gay, straight, sadistic, masochistic, or asexual, was an enigmatic matter of interest. Even, it was speculated by the British novelist Martin Louis Amis that the Fuhrer preferred sex with full clothes on because of his hygiene fetish. While it is said that the German dictator liked the budding school girls of the Catholic convent school, he also had many homosexual partners. However, his name has been very much linked to a number of women, two of whom committed suicide, the third died of various complications eight years after a suicide attempt, and a fourth also attempted suicide.
The peculiar sex life of Hitler can probably be analyzed by meticulously studying all the phases of his sexual experiences, which included his early-life mother fixation, his long-term homosexual phase, and his final years of heterosexuality. During his childhood, Adolf was adored by his gentle mother, who tried to protect him from his father’s whip and belt. His devotion to the fond memories of his mother, Klara, continued throughout his life, and he confessed that his fondest childhood memories were of sleeping alone with his mother in the big bed.
It is said that Adolf Hitler had an aversion to homosexuality and prostitution as he was afraid of contracting a sexually transmitted infection. However, for most of his life, especially in his teens and early twenties, he had a string of male companions that included August Friedrich Kubizek, an Austrian musical conductor, Rudolf Hausler who shared a room with Hitler in the house of the Munich master tailor Josef Popp from May 1913 to February 1914, and Reinhold Hanisch who lived with Hitler for some time in Vienna and used to sell the postcards painted by Hitler and shared equally the sums received.
In the next phase of his life, when he joined the First World War as a soldier, Adolf Hitler enjoyed a sexual relationship with Ernst Schmidt, his fellow dispatch-runner, for around six years. Apart from that, he is also believed to have had secret sexual relations with a senior officer. According to US intelligence, he was not promoted during WW I due to his homosexual inclination. Later, when he became the Nazi leader in 1921, he had sexual relations with his personal bodyguards and chauffeurs. Among them, Ulrich Graf and Christian Weber, two of his bodyguards, were expected to satisfy his needs as and when he liked.
When Adolf was jailed in 1924 for treason, he began a relationship with Rudolf Hess in the Landsberg Castle. During that time, the other Nazis mockingly named Hess as Fraulein Anna and Black Emma. The relationship continued for quite a long time, until Hess became prone to hysterics.
But, in June 1934, as one of the anti-Nazi newspapers started to ridicule the Nazi Party as the Brotherhood of Poofs, a contemptuous term to refer to a band of gay men, Hitler instrumented the indiscriminate murders and imprisonment of hundreds of Nazi Storm Troopers, including their leader ‘Queen’ Ernst Rohm, who was openly a gay. However, during the same time, when hundreds of Nazis were being butchered as they were gay, Hitler was having a secret affair with his Munich chauffeur Julius Schreck at the Hotel Bube, located midway between Berlin and Munich.
Nevertheless, there was a time when Adolf had attempted to become straight and have sexual relations with women, most of which proved disastrous. He had a picture of his mother always hanging over his bed, and most of his heterosexual relationships were never consummated. His first girlfriend during his mid-teens in Linz was Stephanie Rabatsch, a girl of Jewish descent, with whom he never spoke but stared amorously from a distance. Ironically, along with her beloved mother, she became the model for his ideal Aryan woman.
At the age of 38, he began a relationship with a 16-year-old, convent-educated girl, named Maria Reiter. But, when he suddenly lost interest in her, she unsuccessfully tried to hang herself in 1927. Much later, in 1959, she confessed that four years after her failed suicide attempt, she again shared one night of passion with Adolf, and she could never forget that terrible experience when she discovered his sexual tastes were far too extreme for her to accept, and they never met again.
In 1925, Hitler became obsessed with his half-niece, Geli Raubal, when her uncle Alf, 19 years her senior, had a torrid forbidden relationship with her for more than four years. For the last two years of her life, she had been virtually imprisoned in his Munich apartment when Hitler forced her to perform unusual and sickening sexual acts, even forced her to urinate and defecate on him. The episode of Hitler and his young niece (Ref. hitler young niece geli raubal) tragically ended when she shot herself with a gun her uncle had given her as a gift.
It is believed by many that Hitler had her murdered when she became desperate to travel to Vienna to continue her singing lessons, which was specifically negated by Hitler on 18 September 1931, and on the next day, her body was discovered in her bedroom in a pool of her blood with a gunshot wound to her chest and the pistol beside her body.
Somehow, Hitler was terrible to the women that loved him. In 1937, Renate Mueller, one of the top stars of the German silver screen, jumped from her balcony in Berlin to embrace death, after Hitler deliberately ruined her career and ordered the Gestapo to follow her. In the mid-1930s, Hitler lured her into making propaganda films and proceeded to start sordid sex sessions. Later, Renate Mueller once allegedly told film director Adolf Zeissler that on one account Hitler knelt on the floor at her feet and begged her to abuse him, curse him, and beat him mercilessly with a whip, and while she obliged him, he masturbated.
Hitler had a preference for unintelligent women who would not challenge him about his work or prevent him from relaxing in his leisure time. He also preferred younger women who were easy to dominate and mould. Eva Braun, like Geli, did not threaten him intellectually. However, his intimate relationship with Braun for nearly 14 years was mostly hidden from the public and all but his inner circle. When 17-year old model Eva Braun first met Hitler, he was not a recognizable face and she had no idea who he was. Moreover, she was told that his name was Herr Wolff. Interestingly, his name was derived from the old German word ‘Adalwolf’ that stands for Noble Wolf. Nevertheless, during that first meeting, Hitler was reportedly devouring her with his eyes and offered her a ride home, which she modestly refused. Nevertheless, Hitler started to invite her to movies, operas, and meals, until Braun was charmed to pieces. Although she did not fit the mould of Nazi womanhood as she smoked, followed the latest American dance crazes, read fashion magazines, and wore make-up, she embodied Hitler’s ideal in other ways. She was athletic and sporty, a blonde, had almost no interest in politics, and was attached to Heinrich Hoffmann, the official photographer for the Nazi Party. Above all, she was emotionally immature and easy to manipulate. Probably, Hitler started sleeping with her in early 1932.
However, Hitler and his inner circle tried their best to keep Eva out of the spotlight, did not allow publishing any picture of her as they were keen to project the idea that Adolf was married to Germany. Consequently, soon after allowing Hitler to seduce her, Eva found him frequently ignoring her intentionally in public. She became distraught as she saw Hitler running around with other women and leaving her in the lurch. She could not take it anymore as she felt abandoned, and in despair, she scribbled a farewell note and shot herself on 10 or 11 August 1932. The bullet missed her heart, and while bleeding profusely, she managed to call Hitler’s personal doctor and was carted to a hospital. Hitler was shocked at it, visited her at the hospital with flowers, and promised to take care of her. But, as she did not hear a single word from Hitler for the next three months at a stretch, she realized that her suicide attempt failed to change anything in the man she loves. In extreme desperation, she gulped a full bottle of sleeping pills and waited for darkness to overcome her. But she failed again as her younger sister found her in time. This time Hitler purchased a villa in a Munich suburb, near to his own home, and gifted it to Eva, complete with a Mercedes and a chauffeur, exclusively for her personal use.
In 1936, Braun moved to Hitler’s Berghof at Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s Alpine retreat, and later in Berlin. But she led a completely isolated life, rarely appeared together in public. Few Germans knew about her existence, and even the closest associates of Hitler were not sure about the exact nature of their relationship. In the presence of any dignitary or cabinet minister, Hitler tucked her away as a private shame, where no one could see her. Later, even though he named her his private secretary to keep her around, she was forced to sneak into the house through the back door where no one would see her.
In 1943, during the Great War, Henriette von Schirach, the wife of the Reich’s Youth Leader, tried to persuade Eva Braun to flee Germany and Hitler’s side, which she refused. She was determined to stay with him until the end, and when it became clear that Germany was losing the war, she disobeyed Hitler’s order and joined him in Berlin in April 1943. Although the Soviet artillery had started shelling the city centre on the morning of 20 April 1945, Hitler’s birthday party was celebrated in the bunker. Hitler retired early, but Eva was determined to have some fun. Later it was reported that on that night a restless fire burned in her eyes, she wanted to dance, drink, and forget the situation. She cracked open some champagne and played one popular record over and over again. On 29 April, when the bunker was being rocked by shellfire, Eva and Hitler became husband and wife. At the ceremony, attended by Bormann and the Goebbels, Eva wore a silk taffeta dress and her finest jewellery.
The next day the bodies of the newlywed couple were found on the sofa. At the age of 33, Eva Braun ended her life with Hydrogen Cyanide, which contorted her pretty face, and her husband, Adolf Hitler, shot himself in the temple with his pistol after taking the poison.
