She slammed a shot glass onto the wooden bar in a freezing set built to look like Nepal, in 1936, beat a giant Sherpa extra in a drinking contest, punched Harrison Ford in the face, and those frames, filmed in 1980 at Elstree Studios in England for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), directed by Steven Spielberg, instantly made Karen Allen one of the most unforgettable women in adventure cinema of Hollywood. Raiders of the Lost Ark opened on 12 June1981, proved to be one of the greatest action films ever made, and earned $389 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. In addition, it transformed Harrison Ford into a global superstar, elevated Steven Spielberg to legendary status, and introduced a completely new kind of female protagonist, brilliantly portrayed by the relatively new actress Karen Allen.

Born on 5 October 1951, in Carrollton, in rural southern Illinois, to Patricia (née Howell), a university professor, and Carroll Thompson Allen, an FBI agent, Karen spent her first 10 years travelling around the country with her parents and two sisters, due to the professional obligation of her father, and was deprived of ever really having any lasting friendships. After graduating from DuVal High School, a comprehensive science and technology public magnet high school in Maryland in 1969, she moved to New York City to study art and design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, a fashion school under the State University of New York, for two years. It did not occur to her to become an actor until she watched a Jerzy Grotowski’s Polish theatre production of Apolcalypsis Cum Figuris in 1972, and immediately enrolled at Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York City, when she made several student films and directed and acted in several plays.

Allen made her major film debut in 1978, when she appeared as Katy in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), which launched a whole host of young hot stars, and became one of the biggest hits of the year. In her next two films, The Wanderers (1979) and A Small Circle of Friends (1980), she appeared as one of three radical college students during the 1960s, followed by her role as Nancy, the love interest of a character, played by Al Pacino, in the controversial thriller Cruising (1980). Interestingly, her performance in those films caught the sight of Steven Spielberg, who cast her as Marion, the feisty heroine and co-star of Harrison Ford, in his big-budget blockbuster Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), which became an instant hit, a cult film, and is generally regarded by the film critics as one of the greatest action-adventure films ever made.

In the film, the character of Marion, played by Karen, was completely unlike the usual heroines of Hollywood in those days. She was too strong, too independent, and too complicated. She was not a damsel in distress, was not waiting around for a man to give her life meaning. She had a mountain bar of her own, her business, and her own reasons for everything she did. She was a woman who could throw a punch, hold her liquor, run a business, and tell the hero to go to hell. She outdrank men for money and kept a medallion attached to a chain hidden under her shirt that the Nazis wanted badly enough to send killers after her, and when Indiana Jones, her ex-lover, walked through her door, she punched him in the jaw. Accordingly, Allen did not behave like any woman that Hollywood had put on screen before, and played the character as a tough, independent force, who matched the hero, rather than a typical damsel in distress. For her stunning performance in the role, she won the Saturn Award for Best Actress, and came to be known as the most independent and courageous woman in the history of cinema.

Following her huge success in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Karen returned to the mainstream with Until September (1984) and Starman (1984), playing the roles of Mo Alexander and Jenny Hayden, and then took a break for a couple of years to do stage work which she liked most. Interestingly, despite often playing unglamorous roles, Allen also played characters significantly younger than her age, and was voted one of the most beautiful women in the world in 1983. Nevertheless, after the break, she reappeared on the screen in 1987, playing the role of Laura in The Glass Menagerie (1987), Mara in Backfire (1987), and the Christmas hit Scrooged (1988), which initially earned a mixed response from critics upon its release, but was a major box office success.

Nevertheless, apart from several successful stage performances on public theatres and television movies, Karen Allen made her appearance in the biographical drama film Malcolm X (1992), in a small supporting role in the American disaster film The Perfect Storm (2000), directed by the famous German film director Wolfgang Petersen, appeared as Marla in the Academy-Award winning psychological film In the Bedroom (2001), and also played the role of Eunice Kray in the political drama film Poster Boy (2004). However, Allen reprised her best-known role as Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), the fourth instalment in Indiana Jones, which had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 18 May 2008, and was released in the United States on May 22, earning generally positive reviews from critics, and was a huge financial success.

Subsequently, Karen played the lead role of Joan Anderson, an empty nester who escapes her stagnant life and follows her relocated husband to Cape Cod to rediscover her identity, in Year by the Sea (2017), which won 16 awards on the festival circuit in 2016 before its 2017 theatrical release, and her performance was highly praised. Apart from that, she also reprised her role as Marion for the last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).

In her personal life, Karen Allen was married to Kale Browne, her co-star in ‘Til There Was You (1997) in 1988, and they had a son in 1990, but the couple divorced in 1998. However, despite being undoubtedly one of the most talented and versatile actresses, as well as a naturally attractive lady of her days, Karen Allen could not become recognized as a major star during her days, mainly because of her whimsical choice of taking breaks to go back to stage, choosing smaller film projects, and accepting smaller and insignificant roles in television serials. Nevertheless, in addition to her acting career, she writes plays, screenplays, and poetry. She is also known to be a talented singer, and performed with notable artists, played in a band with actress Kathleen Turner, and even recorded a duet with Jeff Bridges for the soundtrack of the film Starman (1984). Beyond singing and acting, she is also known for her work in theatre directing, and her passion for textile design, and started her own textile company, Karen Allen Fiber Arts, in 2003.
