58    Dibyendu Banerjee    03/05/2026

Dedicated to Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara, and known for its peaceful ambiance, elaborate architecture with three pinnacles, Shri Mahavir Ji Temple, situated in Shri Mahaveerji town, in Karauli District, Rajasthan, is considered as one of the miraculous pilgrimages of the Jains, and a prominent centre of devotion for the Digambar sect of Jain devotees. Located along the banks of the Gambhir River, also known as Utangan River, the temple has a long history behind it. Local legend says that long ago, a Gujar farmer named Krapa Ram was surprised to notice that one of his cows pour milk every day on a particular mound near Chandanpur village. As he informed the villagers about the matter, the inquisitive villagers excavated the mound and discovered the idol of Mahavir, and built a hut over the idol, which came to be known as Devata-ka tilla or the mound of the god. Later, a temple was constructed on the spot and the idol was installed ceremoniously by a Digambar Jain merchant, Shri Amar Chand Bilala of Jaipur in the 17th century, which was renovated and expanded in the 19th century, making it a prominent pilgrimage site.

A 52-feet- tall Mahastambha, a column of pride, with four icons of Tirthankaras installed at the top at four cardinal directions, stands at the front of the main entrance, leading to the main temple. Ornamented with cusped arches, decorative architectural features defined by multiple pointed projections, supported by pillars, decorated with a fringe pattern, the main temple is equipped with three pinnacles each bearing a golden kalasha, a pot with a large base and small mouth. The outer walls of the temple are adorned with exquisite carvings of 16 mythological scenes, while the inner walls are embellished with golden paintings of 14 scenes from the lives of Lord Mahavir and Parshvanatha. The holy Garbhagriha or the Sanctum Sanctorum of the main temple houses the idol of the presiding deity, Shri Mahavir Ji, carved of coral-coloured sandstone, and sitting in the posture of Padmasana, flanked by Bhagwan Pushpadanta on the right and Bhagwan Adinath on the left.

Bhagwan Parshvanath Jinalaya or Bhagwan Parshvanath Ji Alaya, situated in front of the Sanmati Dharmashala in the complex, is also called Kanch Ka Mandir or temple of glass for its mirrors and unique glasswork. Dedicated to Lord Parshvanath, and housing his black idol, the temple was constructed by Late Bramhacharini Kamla Bai, a respected Jain scholar. Krishnabai chaityalaya or Krishnabai Chaitya Alaya, built in the 19th century and featuring a double arch entrance, the first of which is foliated with a bud pattern and the second is a round arch, is a superstructure supported by pillars and canopied chhatri, enshrines an idol of Mahavir in lotus position. Apart from that, the Bhavya Kamal Mandir temple, constructed in the 20th century and located on the road connecting Shantinath Ji Alaya and the main temple, featuring an arched gateway and canopied chhatris, is dedicated to Chandraprabha or Chandranatha, the eighth Tirthankara

An annual fair is organized in the temple premises in the month of April, celebrating the birthday ceremony of Lord Mahavir, known as Mahavir Jayanti, which apart from all the sects of the Jains, attracts people from many other communities, including the Gujars. The fair starts two days prior to Mahavir Jayanti and continues for five days, ending two days after the Jayanti,  with a colourful Ratha Yatra pulled by Bullock cart.
