Often considered as the most talented and successful actress of her generation, Jennifer Shrader Lawrence was born on 15 August 1990 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA to Gary Lawrence, owner of a construction company, and Karen, manager of a children`s camp. Jennifer was the youngest of the siblings, and was raised by her mother to be tough like her two elder brothers. Since her early days, she had a horse of her own, named Muffin, and was fond of riding. However, she considered herself a hyper child and a misfit among the other girls in preschool. Although during her early school days, she participated in several activities, like cheerleading, played basketball, softball and field hockey, she did not enjoy those activities, but liked horse riding, and had an injured tailbone, the last bone at the bottom of her spine, as a result of being thrown from a horse. Nevertheless, she liked to act, and for the first time, appeared in a church play when she was only nine. That was the beginning of a glorious chapter, and for the next few years, she continued to perform in church plays and school musicals.
In 2005, when Jennifer was on a family vacation in New York City, she was spotted by a talent scout on the open street, who immediately arranged an audition for the 14-year-old promising girl. Although her first cold reading, reading aloud from a script without any direction, was liked by the agents, her mother was not very much interested about her pursuing an acting career, and encouraged her to go after modelling. However, Jennifer convinced her mother to spend the summer of that year in New York, performing small acting roles and modelling for commercials. Shortly thereafter, her career forced her and her family to move to Los Angeles, where she began her acting career with minor roles in several television shows, followed by her first role in the cable television comedy The Bill Engvall Show (2007-2009), in which she played Lauren Pearson, the rebellious teenage daughter of a psychotherapist. She also made her film debut in the 2008, playing the role of Tiff, a troubled teenager, in the drama film Garden Party (2008), followed by the role of Mariana, also a teenager, who discovers the extramarital affair of her mother in The Burning Plain (2008), for which she earned the Best Emerging Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival.
However, Jennifer’s big break came when she appeared in Debra Granik’s drama film Winter’s Bone (2010), playing the role of Ree Dolly, a poverty-stricken teenage girl who cares for her mentally ill mother and younger siblings, and at the same time, searching for her missing criminal father in the Ozark Mountains. In preparation for the role, Jennifer learnt to chop wood, learnt to fight and skin squirrels, and also travelled to the Ozarks a week before the filming began. In return, she was awarded the National Board of Review Award for her Breakthrough Performance in the film, and at the tender age of 20, received her first best actress Academy Award nomination, becoming the second-youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee at the time, and also earned nominations for the Golden Globe and SAG Award.
Shortly thereafter, Jennifer Lawrence rose to greater fame playing the role of the shape-shifting mutant Mystique in the superhero film X-Men: First Class (2011), and its three sequels, namely X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019).For portraying the role, she had to lose weight, practice yoga, and for the necessary Mystique's blue form, she had to undergo eight hours of tedious makeup session, when latex pieces and body paint were applied to her otherwise nude body. During that period, Jennifer also appeared in David Owen Russell’s romantic drama film Silver Linings Playbook (2012), playing the role of Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow who befriends a man struggling with mental illness, played by Bradley Cooper. Her performance in the film was critically acclaimed and apart from winning the Golden Globe Award, SAG Award, Satellite Award, and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress, she also became the second youngest woman at the age of 22, to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. The same year, she appeared in the role of Katniss Everdeen in the dystopian action film The Hunger Games (2012), and became the face of the Hunger Games franchise, reprising her role in its sequels, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015), all of which set various box office records. Her final film of the year was the thriller House at the End of the Street (2012), directed by Mark Tonderai, which was harshly criticised by the press.
The next year, Jennifer appeared as Rosalyn Rosenfeld, the neurotic wife of a con artist, played by Christian Bale, in David O. Russell's ensemble black comedy crime American Hustle (2013), and she won the Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film. In addition, she also earned a nomination for her third SAG Award, as well as Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. She then again paired with her Silver Linings Playbook co-star, Bradley Cooper in Serena (2014), a poorly received drama set in a lumber camp in 1929, and also appeared in David O. Russell’s biopic film Joy (2015), portraying the role of Joy Mangano, a troubled single mother who became a successful businesswoman for her entrepreneurial talents. For her performance in the film, she won the Golden Globe Award for the third time, and was also nominated for another Academy Award for Best Actress, the youngest actor in movie history to achieve four Oscar nominations. In the science fiction romance Passengers (2016), she appeared as Aurora Lane, one of the two individuals who wake up ninety years too soon from an induced hibernation on a spaceship bound for a new planet. Jennifer felt nervous for enacting her first sex scene in the film, even drank alcohol to make herself prepared for filming those sex scenes. However, the film met with harsh negative reviews, and Jennifer later expressed regret for starring in the film.
Nevertheless, she then appeared in the psychological thriller Mother! (2017), her sole release in the year, in which she played the role of the second wife of a famous poet, whose peaceful life in a secluded mansion is disrupted by the arrival of some unwanted strangers. Although the film was well received by the critics and Lawrence was appreciated for her performance in the film, the role proved to be too much sapping for her; and she was put on supplemental oxygen when she hyperventilated one day, breathing abnormally fast, and also dislocated a rib. The following year, she starred as Dominika Egorova, a former prima ballerina turned into a Russian spy in Francis Lawrence's espionage thriller Red Sparrow (2018), for which she learnt to speak in a Russian accent and trained in ballet for four months. Although Jennifer found herself challenged by the sexuality in her role, later she said that performing the nude scenes made her feel empowered.
Since she was 19, Jennifer wished to work with Adam McKay, and in 2021, she was cast in his slapstick apocalypse film Don't Look Up (2021), along with Leonardo DiCaprio, playing the role of two astronomers, Dr Randall Mindy and Kate Dibiasky, trying to warn humankind of an impending comet strike that will destroy Earth. While reviews for the film were mixed, Jennifer earned her fifth Golden Globe nomination for the film. The next year, she appeared in Causeway (2022), playing the role of Lynsey, a soldier who returned to her home town of New Orleans to recuperate, after having suffered a severe injury while serving in Afghanistan as part of the US Army Corps of Engineers. After that, Lawrence accepted the offer of her friend Gene Stupnitsky, to star in his sex comedy No Hard Feelings (2023), and play Maddie Barker, hired to date the 19-year-old introvert Percy, and bring him out of his shell before he leaves for college. Although rated R for sexual content, involving display of full frontal female nudity, with close-up of bare breasts and pubic hair region, the film received positive reviews from the critics, grossed over $87 million worldwide, and earned a nomination for Critic’s Choice Award for Best Comedy Movie, while Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for another Golden Globe Award.
Most recently, Lawrence produced and starred in Die, My Love (2025), a dark thriller, directed by Lynne Ramsay, a Scottish filmmaker and cinematographer, in which she played the role of Grace, a single mother experiencing mental health issues, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, and struggling to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis. The film was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and the performance of Jennifer in the film was highly acclaimed by the critics, especially for her ability to render a highly explosive performance which is very controlled, and without any melodramatic theatrics.
In her personal life, Lawrence met her future co-star Nicholas Hoult of X-Men: First Class, during their screen test for the film, and they started dating, only to split after two years in August 2014. After that she had a short stint of relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin between 2014 and 2015, after his divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow, and then began dating film director Darren Aronofsky in September 2016, during filming of Mother!. But eventually, they broke up in November 2017, citing the stresses of having a working relationship. Jennifer was introduced to Cooke Maroney, director of an art gallery, by actress Laura Simpson, and they began a relationship. They became engaged in February 2019, were married on 19 October 2019 in Rhode Island, and she gave birth to their son in February 2022.
