Urinating Statues - Titbits
2703    Dibyendu Banerjee    18/04/2020

Curajici postavy (Piss) is a sculpture and fountain in Prague that depicts two mechanical statues of man waggling their bronze penises and urinating in public. Installed in 2004 in a quaint square outside the Franz Kafka Museum, in the Malá Strana area of Prague, the controversial sculpture was created by David Cerný, whose provocative modern art is spread around Prague.

Selected by the Prague Post, a Prague-based English newspaper, as one among the ten top strangest statues in Prague, the sculptural group depicts two 210 cm tall mechanical male figures robotically waggle their bronze penises and peeing into a basin that looks like the shape of the Czech Republic. Moreover, equipped with an electronic device the figures can turn their hips and lift their penises in such a way that the stream of water writes letters on the surface to spell out text messages with their pee.

Made of serrated bronze, the male figures look like created from stacked slices of metal, which works to integrate their swiveling crotch sections. Holding their bronze penises and urinating in public in a never-ending stream, the amusing figures unashamedly swirl their private parts around in a seemingly random pattern. However, apart from their apparent crazy behaviour, they are programmed to spell out Czech literary quotes with their pee streams.

But, anybody can interrupt their constant quotes by simply sending his or her own liking by texting messages to a particular number on a plaque adjacent to the statue. Immediately after receiving the message, their programmed movement will be changed to spell out the new instruction.

Born on 15 December David Cerný never failed to spark controversy with his shocking, controversial and provocative creations placed in public areas, which include among others, the London Booster, a red double-decker bus doing push-ups while groaning, a Crawling Baby on the Zizkov TV Tower, Brownnosers, two giant pairs of legs bent over and moulded into the wall to prominently show their fibreglass anuses, the Hanging Man. However, the kinetic sculpture of two urinating men is perhaps his most photographed work.
