The unimpressive building of St George’s Church, located on 38B Ananda Palit Road in Entally area, owes its origin to the untiring efforts of Rev Kunja Behari Ghosh. During the third decade of the twentieth century, he had conceived the vision to build a new church in the locality for the benefit of the Christian community residing in the vicinity. As the priest of St. Saviour’s Church situated at 9, Haji Md. Mohsin Street he had noticed that, a good number of Bengali speaking members of the church, residing on the eastern side of Lower Circular Road and Entally area, are irregular in attending the church service, mainly due to the considerable distance of the church from their respective residences.
As Rev Kunja Behari Ghosh took the initiative and started to work hard to make his dream project come true, Bishop’s House allotted a plot of land at Park Circus for the construction of the proposed church. However, Rev Ghosh knew that his intention would not be fulfilled, if the church is founded on that site. He patiently convinced the Rt. Rev. Foss Westcott, the then Metropolitan of undivided India-Burma-Ceylon and with his blessings purchased a plot of land on Ananda Palit Road, Entally.
After the completion of the preliminaries, the foundation stone of St. George’s Church was laid on 11 June 1935, by the Metropolitan Westcott. The fund for the construction of the new church was arranged as a form of donation from Bishop Lefroy Memorial Trust, an Endowment fund, generated according to the will of Bishop Lefroy, who donated all his assets for the development of Indian churches. The construction of the church, built in a simple Indian style, was duly completed within a short time, by the month of December in the same year at a cost of 20,000 Rupees.
On 1st January 1936, St George’s Church was dedicated by the Metropolitan Westcott in the presence of five hundred Christian believers. It was dedicated according to Anglican Church traditions. As the Metropolitan knocked on the west door, the Secretary Sushil Kumar Biswas opened the door and welcomed the Metropolitan to dedicate the church. The chalice and paten that the Metropolitan Westcott used in the dedication service were gifted by St. George’s Church, Aelthaton in Lancashire. The dedication service was followed by a lunch, known as fellowship lunch. Sisir Tarafdar, the first Bengali Bishop, who was ordained on 1st January 1936, also joined in the lunch.
A unique contribution of St. George’s Church for the Diocese of Calcutta is the introduction of Bengali Sung Eucharist for the benefit of the Bengali speaking locals. Bengali tune for the Bengali Eucharist was composed by Sri. Mohan Bhattacharjee and first performed by the St. George’s Choir, which is still followed in the Bengali churches of the Diocese of Calcutta. Rev John Gonsalves and Rev T. A. P. Biswas, both priests of St. George’s Church, were the mentors for the historical Bengali Sung Eucharist.
The Easter Monday of 1959 was a remarkable day for St. George’s Church, Entally, when the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Ramsay Michael visited the church and appreciated it highly. Rev. Sushil Chatterjee was the priest during that glorious time. In 2010, St. George’s Church celebrated its Platinum Jubilee year.
