Located in New Town, opposite to the central gate of Eco Park, the Mother’s Wax Museum, containing life size wax statues of more than 50 personalities, is a new feather in the crown of the city of Kolkata. Named after Mother Teresa, the museum was established in November 2014, and opened its doors for the public on 24 December 2014 on the 5th and 6th floor of the building of the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, an enterprise under the Government of West Bengal, as a tribute to motherhood and recognize the extraordinary contributions made by women to society.
The Mother’s Wax Museum in Kolkata offers a journey that begins with an exterior view of the building and continues with an immersive experience inside, which houses the wax sculpture of the famous mothers, along with the reputed athletics, artists, social workers, scientists and more, with each figure complemented by displays depicting their contribution to the society.
The Mother’s Museum in Kolkata, dedicated to the spirit of motherhood, contains one of its most notable exhibits, a life size wax sculpture of Mother Teresa, a motherly caring soul, dedicated to the service of the destitute and the less fortunate and also the founder of the Missionaries of Charity.
Among the other famous mothers, it also houses, a wax sculpture of the Holy Mother, Sarada Devi, the wife and spiritual consort of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who was instrumental in the growth of the Ramakrishna Movement, a wax replica of the legendary sports person Mary Kom, for her exemplary courage, determination and commitment to boxing, as well as serving all the duties and responsibilities of a mother and also a wax statue of astronaut Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian descent to visit space, who dedicated her life for the sake of science. The wax sculptures in the Mother’s Museum represent the famous people from history and contemporary personalities, with a special focus on India, exhibited in lifelike poses, wearing real contemporary clothes.
However, sometimes, some of the sculptures are often removed to make place for the new. The sculptures are broadly categorised and exhibited in several different sections, which include the History and Leaders section, the Literature and Spirituality section, Bollywood-Tollywood and Hollywood section, Sports, and the last, but not the least, Music section.
