History of the Siddhivinayak Temple dates back to more than two centuries, when according to legend, it was originally constructed in 1801, by a childless, devoted couple, Laxman Vithu Patil and his wife, Deubai Patil. The original structure of the temple, containing the black stone idol of Siddhivinayak, 2.5 feet high from its base, with its trunk tilted to the right, was a small, brick-built structure with a dome-shaped top, known as shikhara. However, since then, the temple has undergone renovations and expansions over the years, evolving into the magnificent structure that stands today. The present structure of the temple, planned to expand for accommodating and offering several facilities to the continuously increasing number of devotees, was inaugurated on 13 June 1994. The magnificent, multi-angular, six storey palatial building, complete with its unique gold-plated dome, surrounded by 37 smaller domes, made of gold and pancha-dhatu, a traditional alloy of five metals, comprising gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron. It took 3 years of hard work to complete the structure, at a cost of more than 3 crores or 30 million Indian Rupees.

The new building of the Siddhivinayak Temple, designed by architect Sharad Athale, and constructed with marble, along with pink granite, reflects a blend of traditional architectural style of Hindu temple, and contemporary decorative elements, featuring intricately carved pillars, spires, and ornate embellishments. Equipped with a solid stone elevation to combat the hot humid climatic condition of the region due to proximity of the sea, it has three entrances, leading to the interior of the temple.

The ground floor of the new building contains a spacious pavilion for the use of the devotees, seeking to have a look of the deity from a distance, known as Darshan, and for performing the worship of Satyanarayan and Ganesh Yagna, which involves making offerings to the sacred fire, called Agni, along with chanting of Sanskrit slokas in praise of the deity, known as mantras. The first floor of the temple is actually a mezzanine floor, which is also used for performing Pooja and the auspicious darshan by the devotees, while the second floor contains the kitchen for preparation of Naivedya, the sacred foodstuff for offering to the deity during the worship. The kitchen is linked to the sanctum by an elevator, for directly carrying the Naivedya from the kitchen to the sanctum. In addition, the floor also has a hall, serving as the restroom for the high-caste Brahmin priests. The third floor serves as the central office of the temple and contains the chambers for the committee members, as well as the chamber of the chief executive officer, along with a conference hall, designed for meetings and discussions, and also a modern computer room for handling administration and data processing. Interestingly, the fourth floor of the building contains the library of the temple, containing a huge collection of around 8000 books, which apart from religion, also has an updated collection of books on several subjects, including books on literature, medicine, engineering, economics, and others. The floor also contains a study hall, especially for the students, which is free and open to all, along with the library. The fifth floor is mainly used for preparations of food required for festivals and other special occasions, while the sixth floor, the summit of the temple, is the home for the cluster of domes.

The antique-looking wooden doors to the sanctum display exquisitely carved images of Ashtavinayak, the eight manifestations of Ganesha, the presiding deity, while the inner roof of the sanctum is plated with gold. The sanctum or the sacred core of the temple, located just under the main dome, and locally known as the Garbha Griha, houses the original idol of the temple, meticulously carved from a single black stone, standing at a height of 2 feet 6 inches and a width of 2 feet, flanked by his two consorts, namely Riddhi and Siddhi, symbolising prosperity and success. Adorned with symbolic attributes, the idol depicts Lord Ganesha as chaturbhuja or having four hands, holding a lotus in the upper right hand and a small axe in the upper left, while the lower right and left hands clutch a rosary, a string of holy beads, locally known as japmala and a bowl full of Modak, a typical sweet dish, respectively, symbolizing auspiciousness and divine blessings. The idol also has a sacred thread, resembling a snake, and an eye, etched on his forehead, which reminds the third eye of Lord Shiva. However, the most unique feature of the deity is its trunk, tilted to the right, while almost all the idols of the deity have their trunks tilted to the left.

Every year, the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi, commemorating the birthday of Lord Ganesha, is celebrated at the Siddhivinayak Temple in a grand way. Every day, in the evening, the exterior of the temple, including its unique dome, is lit up with multiple colours, which changes every few hours, adding colour to the otherwise bustling atmosphere of the area. In addition, the temple is also a venue of cultural activities, especially during the festivals, hosting music and dance performances, adding colour to its vibrant spiritual atmosphere. However, apart from being a spiritual sanctuary, the temple, exuding a sense of divine grandeur, is also committed to serve the community through various charitable initiatives, which include providing food, healthcare, education, and shelter to the needy.
