Ruling as the top predator in one of the coldest and remote regions of the earth, stretching nearly 1,000 kilometres and including rugged valleys, snowy forests, and frozen rivers, the Siberian Tiger, also called the Amur tiger, is the largest wild cat on Earth. However, although once they reigned across the Korean Peninsula and northeast China, today they primarily survive in fragmented pockets of Russia and China, with occasional sightings near North Korea. Primarily belonging to the tiger species Panthera Tigris, the Siberian Tiger is classified specifically as a subspecies or distinct population, known as Panthera Tigris altaica, grouped under the mainland tiger subspecies of Panthera tigris tigris, within the big cat genus of Panthera. Despite the design of the black vertical striped pelage, the Siberian Tigers belong to the group of spotted felines, because their stripes are ring-shaped rosettes, vertically stretched to become rows, and are phenotypically recognizable by their size, colour, type of stripes, and length of the hair.

It is important to note that all Siberian tigers are tigers, but not all tigers are Siberian tigers. As stated earlier, a tiger is a large cat species, called Panthera tigris, which includes the Bengal, Sumatran, and Indo-Chinese tigers, while a Siberian tiger, the largest subspecies of tiger, is a specific regional population or subspecies of tiger. The Siberian tiger averages a larger overall body size and weight, while the Bengal tiger features a more compact, muscular build, higher aggression, and a denser population remaining in the wild. A generic tiger, such as the Bengal tiger, has short, thin, bright reddish-orange fur with bold dark stripes suited for warm jungles, while a Siberian tiger features long, thick, pale gold fur with fewer, faded stripes and a winter mane to survive the region’s harsh winters. They also grow longer manes and whiskers compared to their southern cousins, with winter fur reaching up to 4.3 inches (110 mm) on the neck and 4.2 inches (105 mm) on the belly.

The Siberian tiger averages a larger overall body size and weight, while the Bengal tiger features a more compact, muscular build, higher aggression, and a denser population remaining in the wild. However, the male Siberian tigers may grow up to 12.1 feet (3.7 m) in body length, including a 3.3 feet (1 m) long tail and weigh up to 423 kg (about 933 pounds), while the females are smaller, the largest measuring 7.9 feet (2 m) long and weighing as much as 168 kg (370 pounds). In contrast, the Bengal Tiger is slightly smaller, with males weighing 180 to 260 kg (400 to 570 lbs) and lengths up to 10.2 feet (3.1 m). In the winter, its white stomach and chest help keep the tiger out of sight in the wilderness of white snow, while in the warmer months, its widely spread stripes help to camouflage its surroundings, as with the change of seasons its pale orange fur allows it to blend into the forest. Their coats conceal their presence as they move silently from the side or behind their prey and jump on its back, converting it to a good meal. Nevertheless, Siberian tigers are opportunistic, solitary hunters, equally active in day and night, habituated in hunting and moving during both the day and the night. Their primary prey includes Manchurian wapiti, wild boar, different types of deer, and moose. They have been also known to hunt big animals like Asiatic black bears and brown bears, targeting cubs or adults during hibernation, as well as hares, and pikas, a type of small, mountain-dwelling mammal.

Being solitary by nature, each Siberian tiger commands a territory of hundreds of square km of its own, and uses its urine to scent-mark its area to signal its dominance to avoid conflict. They reach sexual maturity between 4 and 5 years old, can live up to 18 years in the wild, or over 20 in captivity, and can breed year-round, though most births occur in spring. Females signal their readiness for mating by leaving urine scents and tree scratch marks. After a gestation period of about 3 to 3.5 months, roughly 93 to 111 days, a tigress gives birth to a litter of normally two or four blind cubs, but there can be as many as six, in a hidden, safe den. However, the male tiger does not take any part in raising the offspring, and lives alone except during brief mating periods, while the cubs stay with their mother for up to three years, learning to hunt and survive. However, it is seen that the females settle near their mother, while males roam much farther to find their own territory.

Unfortunately, with an estimated wild population of only around 400 to 600 individuals living mainly in the Russian Far East and small parts of China, the Siberian tiger is listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list, due to illegal poaching of the tigers for their fur and body parts used in traditional medicines, shortage of available food due to hunting their prey like deer and wild boar. Apart from that, development corridors prevent tigers from travelling between subpopulations, further isolating them and also increasing vulnerability to disease and climate shifts. However, after decades of dedicated conservation and strict protection, like anti-poaching measures, prey recovery, cross-border collaboration, the total wild Siberian tiger population is indicating a significant increase, with the Russian Far East holding approximately 756 individuals, including about 200 cubs, while China's wild Siberian tiger numbers have risen to 72 individuals, up significantly from just 27 a decade prior.
