Parts of speech

In the English language, words are considered as the smallest elements with distinctive meanings. They are categorized into different types or parts of speech, based on their use and function. In other words, a part of speech is a type or category of words with similar grammatical properties.It is, therefore, necessary to understand parts of speech to determine the correct definition of a word.

There are eight parts of speech in the English language and they are categorized as :

1. noun
2. pronoun
3. adjective
4. verb
5. adverb
6. preposition
7. conjunction
8. interjection. 

We shall discuss about them one by one.
